Such a BIG GIRL!

I can't even stand it! First of all, we finally got her high chair. She is maybe not quite as happy about it as I am... I think she enjoyed being a free range eater... but I quite enjoy the not having to chase her around the island part and the no fear of her plummeting part. She slept in her crib for both of her naps today, and is now spending her first night in her own room. I'm so nervous! I have the baby monitor turned up as loud as it will go...

Plus, we finally took the plunge and Meron has been wearing cloth diapers all day. For any cloth diaper people out there... what can I do so she isn't so bow legged?! Notice the picture of her laying in her crib? She is laying on her side, but her diaper is so big on her that that is as far as her legs will go together! Poor little girl... I would have just changed her out of them until I figured it out, but she was SO TIRED tonight and I didn't notice until I actually laid her down in the crib...

Oh, and see how she is standing up in her crib? Yeah, she pulled herself up. She can also stand just holding on with one hand. And we don't really have any furniture she can cruise on, but if I lay on my side on the floor she walks from my head to my knees and back over and over again... just practicing, I guess!

She has also recently begun to follow some directions. She loves her doll that Aunt Elz gave her, and she hugs, kisses, and pats her on the back. She also pokes her in the eyes and throws her... but we don't actually encourage that. Also, today when we were reading, every time there was a picture of a baby she stopped to kiss it. How cute is that?!

Happy 1 Month Famiversary, Mer

We have now been a family for one month. It seems like much longer... in fact, I really can't imagine what we ever did with out Meron. We thought we were pretty busy! Ms. M has added to her repertoire....
walking FAST holding fingers
scooting on her belly... will be crawling with pretty darn soon, but keeps trying to crawl on her hands and feet instead.... and is not successful
saying tickle... well, ticka ticka ticka
feeding herself noodles
making two different ' yum ' sounds
going from laying on her belly to sitting

When you add all of this to the list from her 11 month birthday... wow. She looks more and more like a little girl all the time. Even her hair is growing fast. Yesterday she had a snarl in her hair when I combed it! I'm sure snarls won't be so amusing in a few months when I'm sitting on her trying to brush her hair, but now it is pretty exciting! Plus, the girl is a rock star in the making. Check out these mad keyboarding skills. Thanks, Aunt Elz, for bringing out this amazing talent. You should hear this girl rock the tambourine and maracas!

Noodles...

Merrie fed herself some noodles tonight... she ate 1/4 cup of pasta rings and a 2 oz of sweet potatoes. My baby seriously likes to eat! For the record, it wasn't ME who dumped all of the noodles on the counter... I'll give you three guesses as to who had that brilliant plan, but I think you'll only need one...

One month...

It has been one month since we met Merrie. Time for before and after pictures! Do you think she's gotten bigger?

Asela... yet more about our trip!

Okay, on Friday, August 30 we went to the Oromia region of Ethiopia to the orphanage where Meron's Ethiopian mom brought her. I am going to give a slide show a try, because there are so many good pictures of the countryside. It was just breathtaking. We left at 6am and had to leave Meron at the House of Hope. I felt so bad! She wasn't feeling well and I didn't want her to be left in her crib all day. I thought about just sending Nathan, but decided that if I were her Ethiopian mom (Meseret is her name) I would want desperately to know who my daughter's new mother was going to be. So, we left her there with the nannies... with only a few tears on my part!
Asela is about 2 1/2 hour drive from Addis Ababa. There were few towns or cities in between, but there were still people everywhere. That was really funny to see; even when we were absolutely in the middle of no where there would be people and donkeys and goats walking along the sides of the roads. We saw lots of villages where the homes had mud walls and thatched roofs. The scenery was beautiful. We went through the city of Nazaret, which is the capital of the Oromia region (Meron is Oromo, which is the largest ethnic group in Ethiopia). We got to the orphanage and we, along with Shawn and Lisa H who traveled with us, were given chairs in the directors tiny office. They then brought two more chairs and a middle aged couple and a little girl walked in and sat down with us. We were told through our translator that these were the birth parents of Shawn and Lisa's children. I think we were all a little shocked, and it felt awkward that we were there for such an intimate meeting. They talked for quite some time, and when they were finished they left and a woman walked in and sat down. It was Meron's birthmom. I won't say a lot about our meeting, as that is really Merrie's story to tell. Meseret was very nice, very shy, and very sad. It was pretty tough on all of us, and it was clear how much she loves Meron. It was very emotional and awkward, because really... what could we say? Thank you certainly isn't enough. We got a lot of details that we know will be precious to Meron when she grows up a little and we also got some pictures. Merrie's smile is a lot like her mom's!
We headed back to Addis, stopping at a resort for lunch on the way back. It was really strange, because to get to it we had to drive down a gravel road that was barely passable by car. We kept getting passed by people in horse drawn carts! It was just the middle of nowhere, and we pulled up to this elaborate gate and courtyard. It was near Debre Zeit which is famous for having 5 crater lakes. It was a very fancy restaurant and we ate on the terrace with water on three sides of us. It was calm and relaxing and probably exactly what we needed to reduce our stress level a little bit.
Saturday we went shopping and had a delicious Ethiopian meal and Sunday we were on our way home! We had a 3 hour flight from Addis to Dubai. We ran through the airport and just made it in time for our 14 hour flight from Dubai to JFK. That flight was awful. I really though I was going to die on that plane.... but I wasn't sure if we were going to crash or if I'd just die of old age. The whole plane was completely packed. In fact, I had a big bruise on my elbow, because it was jammed into the wall for 14 hours. Merrie did great though; I think I cried more than she did ! We then had a 6 hour layover in New York.... which was much appreciated. Then a quick 2 1/2 hour flight back to Minneapolis... although we spent an hour on the runway before we took off. It didn't really matter, as all three of us slept the entire time anyway. And that is it! We made it to Minnesota, a whole lot of excited family members met us at the baggage claim area where we received all of our luggage and introduced everyone to the still slumbering Meron. It was an incredible trip... and now you don't have to read any more about it! More gratuitous cute kid pictures for the next 100 posts or so!

More cuteness...

Baby shower fashion choices... How's a girl to decide? The stripey one is clearly her favorite, but dad's voting purple with flowers.
Meron deciding she might be okay with this 'Uncle Aaron' guy
Merrie being cute in her "Let's go bananas" onesie
New trick... the fish face. Way to go, Mer.
Awww.... look at her feet! I can't get over how cute they are.
Meron rocking the air guitar in her Beatles shirt
Meron being cute in her Beatles shirt... you will notice she is 'Sooo Biiig' and is developing an interesting figure... showed off well by the leggings and onesie look.
Merrie's super cute 'G diaper' She also has them in vanilla, brown, and leaf green. They are pretty awesome. We will have to bite the bullet and switch to cloth soon, because we only have 32 more flushable inserts left.

More about the trip...

Okay, the rest won't be so detailed!

On Tuesday Ephrim picked us up at 10am... after a very restless night for Nathan and I and Meron sleeping for 12 hours. We went shopping and bought some traditional clothes and scarves. It was at a big outdoor market with all sorts of identical looking shops selling clothes. We were the only tourists there, and we were instructed by the drivers to pay a man to keep people away from us. It was really odd, but helpful. People really swarmed to us. We also got two of our suitcases, which was also helpful! Wednesday we toured the city. We went to the top of Entoto, a mountain offering a beautiful view of the city. We passed lots and lots of women carrying huge loads of wood down from the mountain to the city to sell. It is incredibly hard work. We toured Menelik's palace and the oldest church in Ethiopia and got our last two suitcases. Thursday was Embassy day. We also toured the National museum and saw the Mercato. The museum was strange. There were some amazing things there: the bones of the oldest hominid (Lucy, or Dinkenesh in Ethiopia) incredible national treasures, thrones and clothing from several different kings, artifacts, etc. The museum looked more like a living room, though. Old carpet on the floors and fake wood paneling on the walls. Things looked dusty and not as well preserved as I expected. It was really fun to see Lucy, though, and some of the art and artifacts were absolutely beautiful.

The Mercato was really amazing. It was just stall after stall selling everything you can imagine. There were people absolutely everywhere. Ephrim wouldn't let us get out of the van, because he said it wasn't a safe part of the city for us.

I was really really nervous about the embassy, as many of you know! I was worried we'd done something wrong in our paperwork and they wouldn't let us have a visa for Meron. We sat in a little waiting room full of people for 3 hours before they called our name, all of us with kids with us. Merrie slept a lot of the time, because she wasn't feeling very well. None of us had diaper bags or anything for the kids, because the appointments usually only take an hour at most. It was pretty miserable. Eventually they called our names and we went to a little booth. We took and oath that we'd tell the truth and they asked a few random questions, and the lady just said, "Congratulations, you've been approved!" It was a serious relief. They dropped us off at our guest house with instructions to be ready to go at 5:30 am so we could go to Assela the next day.

Pictures of Entoto and Menelik's palace, the National Museum and Ephrim some seriously cute kids who followed us through the whole museum playing with Merrie.

New Years Party...

Nathan, Meron and I had our own Enkutatash party. We had a little Ethiopian food and took some pictures of Meron in her traditional Ethiopian dress. Seriously, could she be more beautiful?
