MELKAM ADIS AMET

Happy New Year... 2001!
Today is Enkutatash, Ethiopia New Year. So, in honor of the country of Merrie's birth, take a moment to think of your hopes and dreams for the future and have a really excellent meal.
Ethiopia is just starting the year 2001, because they still use the Julian calendar. They have 12 months of 30 days each and one month with 5 or 6 days, giving them the slogan "13 months of sunshine."
Another interesting tidbit about time in Ethiopia is that they tell time differently. Ethiopians figure time based on dawn. So, 1 o'clock is one hour after dawn. You have to be pretty careful to ask if it is foreigner time or Ethiopian time if you're going to make an appointment!
